Chapter 13

Gideon had removed himself to the bathroom, and Persephone figured it was some kind of custom after sexual encounters. She glanced at the light coming through the one louver, got out of bed, and adjusted it closed. Her legs felt like rubber, her ribs ached, and the deep warm delicious ache between her legs throbbed with her new womanhood, if that was the proper way to say it. How would she explain this when she went back to Heaven? To Father?

It was easier to push these dark thoughts away from her to the graveyard of things she’d deal with in the rest of her immortal lifetime. Everything that was important was happening here and now. In this room. On these sheets. In this bed. In Gideon’s arms. Her heart became prickly, seeking to attach to something she would be incomplete without. Maybe it was the separation of his physical body, the way his muscles rippled beneath her fingers as he pleasured her, as she hoped she pleasured him.

She dove back to the comfort of the warm, moist sheets they’d created with their long lovemaking session. Gone were her thoughts of self-satisfaction. She became acutely aware she was half of something she hadn’t experienced before. Persephone knew she would never again experience being whole without Gideon by her side.

So this was what love was like. The connection. Not just the chemistry of their bodies, but the bonding between their souls. Incomplete without the other, no matter how long she had to endure it. If Gideon were lost to her she knew she’d experience that loss through all eternity. She’d given him that. Or had he taken that? Did he know it would be this way? Would he be forgiving if she felt she couldn’t live without him? And what would she do if something ever happened to separate them?

What if he stopped loving her?

She stared at the ceiling, being lit by the bright yellow sunlight creeping along the square corner borders of the louvered windows. Her hand traveled down between her legs, and she massaged the swollen lips his member had caused in the rooting and ramming, and then she touched the bump to the left of her lips in the space between her upper thigh and the soft tissues of her sex. Gideon had taken her blood there.

There was no scar, no open wound, but a bump and sensitivity. Evidence, in case she thought she’d been dreaming, he’d been there, between her legs, drinking from her.

So what did this make her, then? Persephone licked her lips and yes, there were traces of metallic salt faintly present still, further evidence she’d kissed him with his lips still dripping from her angel’s blood, and then she’d sought her reward for giving herself, her juice of life to him. She’d taken a drop or two of his blood, and it had spurred him on to a frenzy that left her panting just thinking about it.
